The Sanctuary is the name of Bethel Community Church’s work amongst the International Communities of Newport and is based in the Gap Centre. The aim of the project is to show God’s love in a practical way by building friendships, restoring a sense of belonging and community, and offering practical support to people from refugees and asylum seeker communities in Newport. Asylum seekers and Refugees are people that have fled from war and persecution in their homeland and are seeking safety in the UK.
We run English classes for men and women, drop-in services offering help and advocacy, a Mums and Toddlers group, a Men's games nights, provide a weekly meal, plus a number of other occasional social events and opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees throughout the year. Our activities are open to people of all faiths (and none) and we are pleased to welcome participants from all around the world, from many different cultures and backgrounds.
Newport is currently home to about 450 asylum seekers and a larger number of refugees.
The project's objectives are to provide support for refugees and asylum seekers to access mainstream services, to help develop and utilise skills through volunteering, to promote social inclusion and emotional well being through social activities and to reduce social exclusion by developing English language skills.
Relationships are at the heart of the project. We always focus on the individual people, not projects. We work in partnership with other agencies such as Oxfam, Tearfund, Seedbed Christian Community Trust, Welsh Refugee Council, ABHB, Newport City Council and British Red Cross.
Bethel Community Church welcomes asylum seekers and refugees, and includes a significant number of people from sanctuary seeking communities as a part of our wider church family.
